The Field: A rectangular shape with end zones at each end. A regulation field is 60 yards by 40 yards, with end zones 10 yards deep.
The Teams: Beehive Ultimate is Co-Ed. Each team must field 7 players with a minimum of 1 female playing at all times. In future seasons, when we can hopefully recruit more female players, the minimum number of females will increase to 2 or 3.
Initiate Play: Each point begins with both teams lining up on the front of their respective end zone line. The defense throws (“pulls”) the disc to the offense.
B) If the disc lands in bounds and rolls out then it must be taken from where it went out, cannot Brick.
Scoring: Each time the offense completes a pass in the defense’s end zone, the offense scores a point. Play is initiated after each score. If A player jumps up to make a catch then lands with one foot in and one foot out – they are “straddling” the line and the point will not count. If this happens between the end zone and out-of-bounds then the disc will be considered out and it will result in a turnover. If a straddle happens between the end zone and playing field the the player still has possession, but will just have to take a step out of the end zone and resume play.
Movement of the Disc: The disc may be advanced in any direction by completing a pass to a teammate. Players may not run with the disc. The person with the disc (“thrower”) must establish a picot foot (like basketball) and has ten seconds to throw the disc. The defender guarding the thrower (“marker”) counts out the stall count. (Example: Stalling… one… two… three… etc.) If the disc is not thrown within 10 seconds, it is a turnover and the defense takes immediate possession.
Change of Possession: When a pass is not completed (e.g. out of bounds, drop, block, interception, stalled), the defense immediately takes possession of the disc and becomes the offense.
Substitutions: Players not in the game may replace players in the game after a score and during an injury timeout.
Non-contact: No physical contact is allowed between players. Picks and screens are also prohibited. A foul occurs when contact is made.
Fouls: When a player initiates contact on another player a foul occurs. When a foul disrupts possession, the play resumes as if the possession were retained. If the player committing the foul disagrees with the foul call, the disc is returned to the last thrower.
Self-Officiating: Players are responsible for their own foul and line calls. Players resolve their own disputes.
Length of Game: Games will be played to 13 points, meaning that the first team to score 13 wins the game. Winning team must win by 2. So if the score is tied 12-12, then the winning team will have to win 14-12. There will be a hardcap of 50 minutes per game. If neither team has scored 13 points at the 50 minute mark, then the team with the most points will win. Halftime is called when either 7 points are scored in the half, or 20 minutes have passed. At 20 minutes time, the teams do not get to play until the next score.
Spirit of the Game: Ultimate stresses sportsmanship and fair play. Competitive play is encouraged, but never at the expense of respect between players, adherence to the rules, and the basic joy of play.
